André de Gruy was appointed by Governor Bryant and confirmed by the Mississippi Senate to serve as State Defender effective July 1, 2016. He has been reappointed by Governor Reeves to continue as State Defender through June 30, 2024.
André began state service on July 6, 2001, when Governor Musgrove appointed him as the first director of the Office of Capital Defense Counsel. He was twice reappointed by Governor Barbour to serve as Capital Defender and continues in that role.
Before opening Capital Defense, André served as an assistant public defender in Hinds County. He previously served as a staff attorney and later director of the Mississippi Capital Defense Resource Center, Inc., a non-profit law office handling death penalty litigation.
He is a past president of the Mississippi Public Defenders Association and has been recognized with "Life Member" status from that organization.
